Noel’s NPD Diver Tying Instructions

Tying Instructions

1. NPD HEAD: Cut 6-mm craft foam into the following shape.
2. Insert the foam into a 4-inch piece of Mylar piping.

3. Tie the Mylar down to each of the foam ends so that the Mylar is snug around the foam.

4. Fold the material in half and tie the ends together so that the final length of the head is 35-mm and symmetrical. The bound ends represent the front of the head and serve as a tie-in tag.

5. Place a ‘D’ shape piece of 2-mm sticky foam (19-mm wide by 16-mm) to the underside of the head with the curved sides matching. The width of the pocket should be 6-mm wide. Trim the edges of the 2-mm foam.

6. Fit and stack arrow shape of 2-mm sticky foam (6-mm wide by 10-mm) inside the pocket, pointing rearward and onto the ‘D’ shape sticky foam.

7. Apply epoxy over the entire surface area of the head, scrape off excess and let dry.

8. WEED GUARD: On a rotating vise, tie the back end of the weed guard material to the bend of the hook with 4-5 layers of thread. Coat the thread with Softex. Tape the weed guard material back so that it is out of the way while tying the remaining material.

9. Position the thread about 2-mm behind the point where the bend of the hook meets the straight shank.

10. ABDOMEN/VENTRAL: Rotate the hook upside down and, at the midpoint of a roughly 2-inch long bunchc. of ‘abdomen1’ material, tiea.b. (See Notes below) the material to the bottom side of the hook

11. Rotate the hook right-side up and tiea.b. a roughly 8-inch long bunchc. of ‘ventral’ material to the top side of the hook at an offset position where a 5-inch forward section is folded back over a 3-inch rear section.
12. Rotate the hook upside down and at the midpoint of a roughly 1-inch long bunchc. of ‘abdomen1’ material, tiea.b. the material to the bottom side of the hook.

13. Repeat Steps 11. and 12., where the tie-in off-set in Step 11. is roughly 5.5-inches to 2.5-inches

14. Repeat Steps 11. and 12., where the tie-in off-set in Step 11. is roughly 6-inches to 2-inches.

15. Repeat Step 11., where the tie-in off-set is roughly 6.5-inches to 1.5-inches.

16. ABDOMEN/DORSAL: Rotate the hook upside down and at the midpoint of a roughly 1-inch long bunch of ‘abdomen2’ material, tiea.b. the material to the bottom side of the hook.
17. Rotate the hook right-side up and tiea.b. a roughly 8-inch long bunchc. of ‘dorsal’ material to the top side of the hook at an offset position where a 1.5-inch forward section is folded back over a 6.5-inch rear section.

18. Repeat Steps 16. and 17., where the tie-in off-set in Step 17. is roughly 1.75-inches to 6.25-inches.

19. Repeat Steps 16. and 17., where the tie-in off-set in Step 17. is roughly 2-inches to 6-inches.

20. Repeat Steps 16. and 17., where the tie-in off-set in Step 17. is roughly 2.25-inches to 5.75-inches.

21. ABDOMEN/WING: Repeat Step 16.

22. Rotate the hook right-side up and at the midpoint of a roughly 4-inch long bunch of ‘wing1’ material, tiea.b. the material to the top side of the hook. For this bunch, use the same size bunch of 8-inch material, cut it in half and stack. With finger nail, flatten and distribute the material around the top half of the hook.

23. Repeat Step 16.

24. Rotate the hook right-side up and tiea.b. a roughly 4-inch long bunch of ‘wing2’ material to the top side of the hook at an offset position where a 1-inch forward section is folded over a 3-inch rear section. With finger nail, flatten and distribute the material around the top half of the hook. There should be roughly 20-mm of hook shank remaining behind the eye.

25. HEAD/NPD: Tie on a 4 -inch piece of chenille and wrap it forward, pull it back and then wrap it forward again, resulting in a double layer of chenille covering 7-mm of hook shank. There should be roughly 13-mm of hook shank remaining behind the eye.

26. Cover the remaining 13-mm of hook shank with a layer of thread. Using super glue or similar, glue the ‘NPD head’ in position and then apply a generous number of tapering thread wraps up to 2-mm behind the hook eye.

27. Tie on a 4 -inch piece of chenille, apply a coat of super glue to the exposed thread, and wrap the chenille forward to the hook eye.

28. Rotate the hook upside down, pull the ‘weed guard’ material forward, and slip the end through the hook eye. Tie the ‘weed guard’ material to the bottom on the hook shank with roughly 5 wraps. Rotate the hook right side up, pull the end of the ‘weed guard’ rearward and apply roughly 10 additional wraps of thread. Clip the extra weed guard material and whip finish.

Notes:
a. All materials with the exception of the ‘weed guard’, ‘collar’, ‘nose’ and ‘head’ components are tied to the hook using a version of the high-tie methodb.
b. For the ‘NPD Diver’, apply a wrap of thread, dividing the material in half or off-set, as instructed. Subsequent wraps of thread (3 or so) are progressively rearward moving wraps. The forward section of material is then pulled back, laid over the back section of material and tied down on top of the initial thread wraps using another series of wraps (3-5) moving progressively forward. Each bunchc. of material covers roughly 2-mm of hook space.
c. Use lighter bunches of material; roughly 50-75 fibers/bunch.
